What is Alcoholism?

Alcoholism is defined as an irresistible urge to consume alcohol. People suffering from alcoholism are very well aware of the dangerous effects alcohol could have on their bodies, but still they are unable to resist the urge to consume it. They will usually drink beyond acceptable limits and will be in an inebriated state most often, causing embarrassment and inconvenience to the people with them.

Of all the people I have encountered who once struggled as an alcoholic, but don’t anymore, none of them said it was their spouse’s or families’ fault. “If only he/she did not enable me so much” or “if only he/she was not a codependent, I could have stopped drinking sooner”, are two statements I have never heard from a recovered alcoholic. In fact, it is the complete opposite. Those who have “recovered” value the strength and understanding they received from others.

The majority of the alcoholic impairments are behavioural. So in the day-to-day interactions of family life, the family members are confronted with alcoholic behaviour. The family is, confused, be wildered, angry and afraid. They act accordingly. Their responses characteristically are as impaired as the alcoholic’s.
